The Tafea Provincial Government Council has entered a new chapter of leadership following the conclusion of the outgoing council’s term in early May 2025. A formal administrative sitting held on May 4 marked the official end of the council’s term, with preparations now underway to welcome a newly elected leadership team.
The final sitting addressed internal housekeeping matters, including the removal of two councillors who had missed two consecutive meetings, in accordance with council standing orders. Their seats were promptly filled by runners-up from the most recent provincial election.
“After four days [of administration], those honorable councillors become normal citizens as we prepare to go through the Provincial Election which will happen soon,” a statement from the Council noted.
Though the names of the new president, vice-president, and council members have yet to be publicly announced, officials have confirmed that the electoral transition is in progress, with planning and coordination already underway to support the incoming team.
In February 2025, the Council held a three-day provincial retreat that brought together government departments, NGOs, and civil society stakeholders to align strategies for the upcoming term. The retreat focused on aligning development priorities, provincial planning, and service delivery in anticipation of a new leadership.
While the broader Tafea public awaits an official statement confirming the composition of the new council, expectations are high for a fresh start as the province navigates critical issues around infrastructure, economic development, and public services.
The Tafea Provincial Government has yet to publish the results of the recent election, though sources indicate that a formal announcement is imminent. As Vanuatu’s southernmost province, Tafea plays a vital role in national development and regional stability, and the leadership transition is being closely monitored by communities and national observers alike.
