Establishment and Development

The Futuna Area Council is one of the twelve official Area Councils within Tafea Province, serving as the local governance hub for Futuna Island. The council comprises nominated members representing chiefs, women, youth, and church groups, ensuring inclusive governance.

Our Objectives

While there is no publicly published mission statement unique to Futuna Area Council, the general objectives for all Area Councils include:

  • Conducting community profiling and developing area-specific plans

  • Supporting local infrastructure and service development

  • Facilitating linkages between government agencies and communities

Recent and Ongoing Projects

A notable project supported in the broader Futuna community is:

Community Fish Market House (Ipao): Established around 2000 with support from Vanuatu Fisheries Department and the Vanuatu Climate Adaptation Program (VCAP), this facility is operated by the village council. It aims to promote local fishing, reduce dependency on imported food, and generate income through selling locally caught fish to other islands.

There are additional small‑scale projects in renewable energy, education and communications such as the Outer-island ICT connectivity to give access to Futuna's inhabitants to government services now accessible locally include printing national IDs, obtaining police clearances, receiving weather alerts, and accessing emergency coordination.

Conclusion

The Futuna Area Council, officially recognized as one of the twelve Area Councils of Tafea Province, serves an essential role in connecting remote communities to broader government planning. Its responsibilities are broad and community-driven, even though detailed records of council-specific projects or opening events are sparse in public sources. Verified population and demographic data show a small but vibrant community, centered around traditional leadership and local institutions.
